I brought some of this with me on a long car trip this summer. From experience I know that when my head starts nodding, I have but a few minutes to pull over and take a catnap, or become a danger to myself and others. Trouble is, there isn't usually a place to pull over right away--the nearest rest area is often a half hour or so away (and on some state highways there are none at all). Not a problem with Stay Alert! This time I popped one piece, started chewing, and literally within a few seconds my head stopped nodding and I felt exactly as though I had taken a nap. I was wide awake. The effect stayed with me for 2-3 hours, and by then I was able to find a rest area and take a nap.

I used it sparingly, only when I had no choice; I took naps whenever I could, and Stay Alert saved my behind several times on this trip. This stuff really works. And Amazon has it for the lowest price I've seen online.

It has a cinnamon flavor which is acceptable, but not the best. But then again, you don't chew this for the flavor. When you're tired but you need to keep going, you don't care about flavor; all you care about is staying awake. This stuff will get you over the hump.
Best caffeine product ever!

I am currently working on my third tray of Stay Alert, I have one a day at about 3pm. It keeps me going and makes it so I don't get crabby from not having enough coffee (I drink eight cups every morning). It only takes five minutes of chewing to feel great again, I have shared this great product with my family members who also are coffee addicts like myself. Sometimes if I have to leave quickly to an emergency and cannot get any coffee in my system I chew one piece of gum in the car. I have Stay Alert stashed all over the place: In the center console of my car, on top of the microwave, at my desk, in my nightstand, in my earthquake kit, and in my tool kit. It's like having extra batteries for your flashlight.

The taste is great and really does not have anything funky going on like all of the other chewable caffeine product on the market (I have tried them all over the last fifteen years). This gum is better than any pill because you get instant results and no jitters or overdose feeling. Just a perfect clean alertness.

If this company ever goes public I want in!!!

Thanks Stay Alert!!!!!!!!!

It works faster than coffee, takes no preparation time, freshens your breath and tastes like real gum. I would recommend this for truck and ambulance drivers, anyone working late hours, for people who like to party but lack the energy to do so, and just about anyone else who needs to "Stay Alert" but might not have access to a coffee pot or the time to make a cup.
more convenient than coffee

I love coffee, the taste of it and it's effects on making me awake, alert, and creative... that said, sometimes getting a cup of joe can be inconvenient. Enter Stay Alert gum! Yowsa, within a minute or two you realize you're a lot more awake, much faster than drinking coffee or any energy drink. If getting awake fast is your goal, this gum is your solution.

I'm not sure what medical issues the gentleman who posted two stars who wanted to downgrade his review to one stay but clearly he has some type of mouth problem (or other issue) is he's not getting the effect quickly. The majority of the other reviews here though are spot on, including, sadly, the taste, it's pretty awful, that said, it doesn't last long (thankfully). I've tried the others including Jolt, they do not pack a punch like this gum.

Now the only reason I'd see fit to want to deduct half-a-star though it'd only be a personal thing, it does, when taken too many and/or following coffee, for me, give me some heart palpitations. Like the other person said, it'd be hard to consume 10 cups of coffee without knowing you're doing so and potentially giving yourself a caffeine overdose. The directions are very clear that you start with one, wait for the effect, then if you need another take two. Consider these like any serious drugs, these aren't for kids but adults with good cognitive reasoning. Be responsible with this product.
Terrific product, odd pricing

I love this product and most highly recommend it! The sweet coating and cinnamon flavoring covers the bitter caffeine taste reasonably well, though not nearly as completely as the Arctic Mint version of this product.

The screwy thing is the pricing: The 24-pack costs $2.00 more than buying four 6-packs ($28 vs. $26), so it's clear they've adjusted their pricing to make money on the "shipping costs." I have Amazon Prime, but instead of "free shipping" it's really "$2.00 shipping." (If shipping was really free, the 24-pack product price would be LESS than $26 because the manufacturer's cost for the tray must be less than their cost for four 6-packs.)

Aside from the shipping cost, it's a great product!

They issued us Stay Alert gum when I was serving in Iraq in 2005 and it quickly became a favorite of my whole unit. My current job requires long hours so when I saw it available here I couldn't get my hands on it quick enough. Fair warning though the "do not take more then" is no joke.
Most Effective Gum I've Tried

I have tried other caffeine energy gums including Jolt gum but none are a strong as Stay Alert. One Stay Alert and I am able to focus on what I need to do. The other gums have made me jittery but not this one. The only warning I would give is that you do not use too much of this gum and not late in the evening because it is VERY strong. I would recomend you try one and if 10-15 minutes later you are still drowsy pop one more but don't go for more than one at once unless you have used this gum before. I repeat it very effective and strong so don't overuse it or it will be a long sleepless night indeed. :)

After chewing two pieces of this gum in the morning I feel completely alert - in about 15min) as if I had spent an hour drinking a few cups of coffee (my former morning routine).

I think the gum has a pleasant cinnamon taste; however, some of my friends complain of an aftertaste.

Works much more effectively than "civilian" caffeine gums like Jolt.
Personally, the taste is acceptable but others who have sampled some have complained of it.

Honestly though, if you are buying caffeinated gum the idea is to stay more alert.
Chewing regular gum afterwards helps if the taste is extremely bothersome.
Controlled, convenient intake

Summary: It works

Details: To state the obvious and redundant, would be the inherent convenience of consuming caffeine on the go. I don't have to deal with a flask of coffee to lug around all day. Each ball of gum is exactly 100 mg of caffeine. To better calibrate this number, a cup of coffee is 135 milligrams and a red bull is 80 mg. The gum does not taste very good, neither does stale black coffee. Consider chewing the gum with trident splash, they taste pretty good together. Here are some reasons I switched from coffee to gum:
1. Cheap coffee can be acidic
2. You can avoid SUGAR and lactose.
3. I control the dosage, stick to exactly two balls of gum, one in the morning and one after lunch. Have a B complex vitamin with the gum, amplifies the effect.
Great Stuff!!!

... perfect for any time you would like a pick-me up and don't want to make or get or even drink coffee. As gums go I prefer and usually chew sugarless cinnamon, but this gum is also good and has an interesting slight bitterness that I enjoy. Just one piece is fine and the buzz comes on smoothly and doesn't result in the jitters. Great for bicycle rides or to keep in your tool bag just in case it's late and you have many miles to go. Mixes well and enhances other mind altering activities. Excellent for enjoying an evening out. I expect that I will always keep a supply on hand.
Easily the most effective (if least pleasant-tasting) form of caffeine I've ever ingested.

Reviewer: Javier Segovia, Chicago
Most forms of caffeine made to keep me awake have suffered from one or more of the following problems:

Eventual post-caffeination (and/or sugar) crash
Hyper-activity
Stomach irritation
Jitters
Ineffectiveness

Stay Alert has become my preferred form of caffeine quite simply because it suffers from none of these. It doesn't give me a buzz or make me feel wired. It simply keeps me alert. After taking it, I don't feel sleepy. Instead I feel perfectly awake and nothing more, which is precisely what I want. Also, it works for hours on end, is highly portable, and is cheaper than most other forms of caffeine. The only downsides are it's artificially sweetened and begins to taste bitter rather quickly. It's not meant to be chewing gum, though. It's meant to keep you awake, and it does just that. Further, considering caffeine is bitter by nature, the flavor's a small price I'm willing to pay.

This gum offers a really quick boost of energy and alertness. Just chew for 5 minutes to get 100 mg of caffeine (about the same as an 8 oz up of coffee). The five pieces per pack make it really easy to carry with you. It is especially convenient in the car, when you need to wake up and don't want to stop for coffee and/or don't want to fill your bladder (thereby necessitating another stop later). The gum has a pleasant cinnamon flavor with just a hint of bitterness -- not an unpleasant bitterness, but it's there. It is made with sugar and I've noticed no aftertaste. This product does exactly what it claims.

I have caffeine related products out of the ying-yang, and this seems to work the best for me. Okay, so the taste isn't too great, but a small price to pay. My biggest concern is keeping it away for our kids b/c our 5-year old loves gum, and I certainly don't want him getting into this!
Great Caffeine Source

I'm the type of person who uses caffeine as a drug to stay focused. My friend, who was former military, gave me a pack of these to try. Let me just say that the military money gets results! This was fact acting, small, and cheap. It works out to about $0.25 a cup of coffee- each gum has 100mg caffeine (5 pieces per packet, 24 packs per box). This destroys any other caffeinated products I've ever tried- it beats coffee for price and ease of use. It beats jolt gum cause it has 6x the amount of caffeine jolt does. It beats energy drinks because they are so expensive and loaded with TONS of sugar. These things are extremely portable- just carry in your pocket (they were meant for military!). Great for law enforcement to have in the war bag to stay awake in the field when you are stuck on a call or stakeout. A friend who is in vet school loves these cause they have to stay alert and study so much. To be honest, you don't buy stuff like this for taste. The first minute of these things you just taste the sugar and flavoring, but after that the bitter taste of the caffeine starts to be come apparent. The taste comes out slowly at first, and never completely overpowering, but anyone chewing this just to enjoy gum, and not as a tool to stay awake, would never chose this gum over any other gum in the world for flavor. That being said, the taste isn't terrible. I've had all 5 flavors. The Cinnamon is the worst, and unless you are a fan of big red or gum like that I would avoid it (I don't like Cinnamon flavor). IMO, the Spearmint flavor tastes the best at first (only slightly better than Arctic Mint), but then the caffeine is more noticeable with Spearmint in the end than with Arctic Mint flavor. Overall, if you are going for the best overall flavor experience I chose Arctic Mint. I cannot recommend these enough.
Tastes like bitter defeat

Review Date: May 5, 2010

First off, it tastes like bitter defeat. The Cinnamon seems to do the best job of masking the caffiene flavor (I reccommend you avoid the others), after a while you get used to the taste but the first time you try this gum you should have a soda nearby to get the taste out of your mouth.

There are other products that taste better, but none work as well as Stay Alert.

My job keeps me up late at night on a regular basis (sometimes I'll be awake for 36+ hours in a week were I get 5 hours of sleep a night), and this gum has taken a place of honor next to the desk.

Caffeine quick 100mg

This is a product of your taxes at work. The Army spent a lot off money developing a method to keep our troops extra alert for extended periods of time while not injuring them. They discovered the quickest way to deliver caffene is to chew it not swallow and dijest though you can just swallow it . The product works fastest when chewed . This is stronger than JOLT(40mg) gum and faster working , having 100mg of caffeine per piece. One piece works for me about the same a three pieces of JOLT gum (a good product that tastes better). If you need caffeine this is a great and convenient delivery system. Keep in your auto/truck for when you get sleepy behind the wheel , this stuff really works . I am a big guy and it has never taken more than two pieces to fully wake me up . For when you didn't get enough sleep the night before the test. Not for kids under 18. If caffeine makes you jittery don't use this product.
Pretty Good

I can honestly say that the gum did give me energy but they need to work a little on the taste. It does taste like cinnamon but a lil more juicy taste would make it better. Buy it if you r looking for a pick up cause it works.
Worth the Price

I've developed a terrifying habit of getting very sleepy while driving. I've never had an accident, but I avoid driving at night, and even in the daytime staying awake can be difficult. If necessary I pull over and nap or exercise, but that takes time. I've tried taking along a quart of coffee, but that's a bother. Buying coffee can work, but it takes time, and there isn't always a source of coffee near at hand.

A couple months ago I discovered 24, by Jolt, and that gum works well and has little aftertaste, but I need usually six pieces--half a pack. I recently found Stay Alert on here and bought a lot of it. It arrived two days later. It costs about $1 for five pieces, so about 20 cents a piece. Each piece is twice the thickness and twice the strength of a piece of 24. Depending on how sleepy I am, I find that if I chew one or two pieces, within a couple minutes I'm feeling fine. It's much cheaper than buying coffee. I like the fact that the packaging is much simpler and cheaper and eco-friendly than 24, and it packs easily into a pocket or bag.

The only bad thing is that after a minute of tasting sugar and cinnamon in a nice burst, there is about fifteen minutes of tasting the bitterness of the caffeine (ever got a no-doze pill stuck in your mouth?). Then that pretty much goes away, and there's an acceptable but mild cinnamon taste thereafter. Stay Alert has a much more unpleasant aftertaste than 24, but it's stronger and a bit cheaper. It may work a bit faster than 24, and more of the caffeine may be entering the blood stream from the mouth, rather than the stomach. What that might do to the mucous membrane, I don't know.

In any case, it is literally a life saver, because it always wakes me up when I'm getting sleepy while driving. Highly recommended for truckers and travelers. The caffeine isn't good for you, but probably this is better for you than drinking the coffee, and it's sure cheaper.
Worth it

This gum has 100mg of caffeine in it, which is approximately equivalent to one cup of brewed coffee. However, it works MUCH faster.

Being a college student, I'm often up very late (either for studying or for more fun activities) and have to get up very early, so this has been a lifesaver when I'm about to fall asleep during a test or important lecture.

Be sure, though, that you follow the directions EXACTLY. You're to chew ONE piece for FIVE MINUTES. The first time I used it I'd already had a few cups of coffee in the morning and I popped two pieces in my mouth. Unfortunately, I started shaking and my hands were twitching for more than an hour. It wasn't scary (actually, a rather amusing experience) but if you need to be at work or driving, BE CAREFUL.
Get paste the taste, enjoy the rest.

I'd see this product several times when at the Shopette, and being an Army nerd, and noticing the simple packaging, I figured I'd give it a shot.

So, on the drive to the mall I popped a piece in my mouth to test it out. I've never felt that alert in my life. Of course, you get the powerful burst of cinnamon, but as others state, you're left with the pure flavor of caffeine for some time. After that subsides, it's rather pleasant.

Pop in one piece, you're good. Pop in two, like the instructions state, and you'll most definitely feel the effects kick in that much quicker. I handed pieces to my buddies for them to try and they couldn't believe how quick it worked in comparison to the energy drinks they'd chug.

Most people mention the bitter taste, but after a while you get used to it. Besides, we Army people have eaten worse, right? ;) It does just what it should, and is supposedly only available to the military, but as it's listed here that's obviously not the case!

As long as you can deal with the flavor you're left with after the initial rush of cinnamon, you'll be good. This will help keep you focused on the road, in class, or at work in general when you're in need of that extra boost to keep from planting your face on the desk.
Life Saver But Use With Caution...

"Stay Alert Caffeine Supplement Gum" was designed for use by the U.S. Army in situations where soldiers were fatigued but having a cup of coffee was out of the question. This reviewer uses it to restore alertness during long drives, long meetings, and sometimes early morning hikes.

The gum is coated with a cinnamon flavor shell which has a strong taste. The gum itself is easy chewed for a few minutes for increased alertness. A second piece can be chewed if the first doesn't quite do the trick. A package with five pieces of gum fits easily into a pocket.

The package warns against having more than one or two pieces at a time; it is not a substitute for real rest. Prolonged chewing can leave your mouth dried out. Exceeding the recommended dosage can leave your heart racing from caffeine overload.

"Stay Alert Gum" is highly recommended as a substitute for a cup of coffee or soda in overcoming minor fatigue.

I have a friend who is a volunteer fireman. He gets calls at random times though the night to drive to fires. I gave them to him as a birthday present and he loved them! They give you a quick burst of energy fairly quickly so that you can drive and make serious decisions with a clear and alert mind. I would reccomend them to all emergency response type people.

He did not say anything about the flavor to me, but he didn't complain either...so sorry I can't say anything more about the taste.
Stay Alert Gum review

Reviewer: Kevin D. Reynolds, Cincinnati, Ohio
I have found the Stay Alert gum a godsend both at work and driving on expressways. I use it judiciously because I have minor heart problems that could be worsened by caffeine. Its' main advantage is that if you are feeling drowsy, you can chew a piece or 2 (Each piece has 100 mg of caffeine and is absorbed through the lining of your mouth) and it will begin working almost immediately to bring you back to full alertness. I will take a piece before or during a long expressway drive, a long meeting at work or occasionally when working at the computer.

I was concerned about the taste, since that was rated "poor" in the articles I read. While I wouldn't choose this for a recreational chewing gum, the taste was certainly tolerable and I didn't spit it out after 5 minutes as suggested by the military (when most of the caffeine has been absorbed through the lining of your mouth). Chewing a piece of regular cinnamon gum at the same time would almost totally mask any off flavor, but I have not found it necessary to do this.

If you are having recurrent problems with drowsiness at meetings, while keyboarding or while driving, this alternative is more convenient than coffee, works faster than caffeine tablets and causes no gastrointestinal distress. I highly recommend it, although I would also recommend having a sleep study and being checked for sleep apnea if you are having those symptoms. This ailment is more common than many realize and will eventually affect your heart function, as it did mine. This product is effective, but the taste is so horrible that I threw it all out. It is worth stating, I can endure nearly any taste if I feel I have a reason to, and with the expense of this product and two full trays... I had a reason to. Unfortunately, I found that I could not bring myself to chew this for the full five minutes recommended, since the taste got more and more bitter with every chew. Considering the many other options I have for caffeine (including Jolt Gum which is entirely palatable), I will not be buying this again.
I found a way to get past the taste.

I also, found the taste when chewing this stuff enough to make me ill.
It REALLY is awful!!!
And the jolt is a little more than I prefer.
I think I found a solution that will work for me and might for some other people as well.
I got out my rose clipper and carefully cut them into pieces that are smaller and easily swallowed with a beverage.
I still feel like I do get the necessary pick me up, but without the jitters or the awful taste.
So, I ended up pleased with an item that tasted SO awful that I almost threw them away.
Works for me and I think the price for how much caffiene you get on these versus some of the other products out there is pretty good.
I didn't want to go broke staying alert.
Taste terrible, but works

Reviewer: Joey D,
This is definitely not your cinnamon bubble gum. This stuff taste terrible after the 5 minutes of recommended chewing (pretty decent up until the end of the 5 minutes). The major upside is that you can take it anywhere and it works pretty good. I am not allowed coffee (or any other drink) in my classes and I need something to stay awake. This, jolt gum, jolt mints, coffee, and tea contribute to staying awake for class. Personally, I would go for the jolt gum, and I will the next time I buy more gum. It tastes a lot better and you only need 2 pieces to get the same caffeine content, so it comes out to be about the same price...

STAY ALERT Military Caffeine Energy Gum - Six Pack (6 packs, 5 pieces per pack) Cinnamon Flavor - 100 mg Caffeine per piece

This has to be by far one of the WORST tasting caffeine gums out there. I have been chewing caffeine gums, taking caffeine mints, drinking caffeinated water for years now. Mad Croc is also pretty bad, the sick bitter taste this gum has, is alot like chewing a no doze tablet. Its just crap and I cannot believe people reviewed it and said it tasted good. Its just awful, seriously.. Jolt is alot better, Mad Croc is equally awful tasting though.. If your looking for a flavor, look elsewhere, this just taste like chewing an aspirin... TERRIBLE...
